Dry pockets expanding in southwest Iowa

Dryness is a concern for crop farmers in southwest Iowa.

Iowa State University Extension field agronomist Aaron Saeugling says rains have been spotty since early spring.

“You could go as far as a mile or two, sometimes less than that across a section, and there’s a lot of variability in the amount of moisture that we’re getting.”

He tells Brownfield yield potential will suffer if measurable precipitation doesn’t come by the time crops enter reproductive development.
