HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Today, the City of Hutchinson, in collaboration with community partners, neighbors, and the distinguished veterans who have valiantly served our nation, marked the unveiling of the Eternal Flame at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial situated on First Avenue and Walnut Street.Soldiers and Sailors Memorial

This memorial, a timeless symbol of reverence, was originally dedicated on Flag Day, June 14, 1919, to pay homage to the valorous service of Union soldiers and sailors during the Civil War. The monumental undertaking to create this tribute began in 1915 through the collaborative efforts of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), a nationwide organization of Union Civil War Veterans, and the city itself. Remarkably, the Hutchinson memorial stands as one of just three monuments of its kind in the state of Kansas.

Today, the newly introduced Eternal Flame stands as a poignant acknowledgment, honoring the relentless bravery and sacrifices of all those who have earned the esteemed title of American veteran. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Kansas Gas, the Hutchinson Community Foundation, and private donors whose generous contributions played a pivotal role in bringing this meaningful project to fruition.
